Think2030 Denmark | Session 4 – How can energy reforms improve European competitiveness?

High energy prices challenge European businesses that cannot compete with American and Chinese rivals. The main driver is the EU’s unsustainably high import of expensive fossil fuel from geopolitical adversaries caused by stagnating European electrification.

To reduce energy costs and imports and to reach its 90% target for 2040, the EU needs to double electrification rates and grid investments, while decarbonising its electricity supply and integrating its market. The panel will discuss how to address these challenges through European policy reforms.

Guiding questions:

  1. How should the European Commission promote European electrification towards 2040, as part of the future climate and energy architecture that gives businesses access to affordable wind and solar?
  2. What changes are needed for European TSOs to double grid capacity?
  3. How can the EU address the increasing asymmetry between the Member States that build out renewable energy and the Member States that benefit from it?
