Why did Friends of Europe decide to join the Think2030 platform?
Friends of Europe is an independent think tank with a passion for good policymaking, that supports a multilateral world in which all levels of governance, the private and civil society sectors, as well as citizens, cooperate to solve common challenges. The renewal of the social contract in Europe is our overarching objective for 2030 and we strongly believe in the necessity to accelerate carbon reduction as one of the policy choices for an inclusive and fair transition. Joining Think2030 represents an opportunity to participate in a robust multi-stakeholder platform that will stress the importance of staying the course of the European Green Deal and achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions.
What do you think can be Friends of Europe’s biggest contribution to the Think2030 platform and its activities?
Friends of Europe can contribute to the Think2030 platform and its activities by fostering new leadership that embraces diversity, collaboration and impact across sectors. Thanks to its citizen engagement platform, Debating Europe, and the European Young Leaders (EYL40) programme, as well as its wide and high reaching network of Trustees and key decisionmakers from the worlds of policymaking, business and civil society, Friends of Europe can provide fresh thinking from across sectors, Member States and beyond.
Why is it important that the Green Deal continues beyond 2024 and what should be its main priorities after these most recent EU elections?
As Europe is the fastest-warming continent in the world, it is essential to maintain the European Green Deal as a priority in the new institutional cycle to tackle the various climate risks that threaten the security of European citizens. In addition, the green transition is not only a necessity but also an important opportunity: decarbonisation can be a source of growth for Europe if we can effectively collaborate to enable leadership in clean technologies and circular economy.
What are you looking forward to most about being part of Think2030?
As the Think2030 events are organised in the country of the rotating EU Council Presidency, it allows for bridging European and national policymaking, thought leadership and policy recommendations for a truly pan-European interaction. We also hope to benefit from regular policy exchanges with the many members of Think2030 and build a common understanding of how best to sustain support for Europe’s decarbonisation.
As an open discussion platform, we are always happy to welcome new partners and organisations working towards a more sustainable Europe.
