Addressing conflictualization in international environmental policies

The EU Green Deal has been the cornerstone of EU environmental and economic policies for the past five years, and introduced measures with extraterritorial impacts such as the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, the EU Deforestation Regulation, or the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive, highly scrutinised or even raising concerns in Global South countries. How do these policies with extraterritorial reach affect actors in the Global South? What are the key challenges in ensuring a globally fair transition while maintaining a high level of ambition? And how can the EU better align its values and interests to mitigate negative socio-economic spillovers? 

Join us for an expert workshop where we will present and discuss the findings of the 2025 European Green Deal Barometer, which this year focuses on the external dimension of the EU Green Deal with contributions from extra EU actors. This session will bring together policy experts, researchers, and stakeholders to examine how European foreign policy tools – from trade policies to international partnership policies – can contribute to a just transition worldwide:
